Reed was selected as one of the top 40 under 40 litigation lawyers in Mississippi by the American Society of Legal Advocates. Additionally, Reed was selected as one of the 10 Best Family Law Attorneys for Mississippi by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys (AIOFLA).
Biography: After graduating from Brandon High School, Reed attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on a full scholarship. Reed majored in political science with an emphasis in criminal justice programs. Initially, he planned to join the United States Marine Corps as a path toward a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). These plans changed when he met his to-be wife, the former Dee Dee Burt, and was offered another generous scholarship to continue his studies at the University of Mississippi School of Law.
While in law school Reed made good grades and graduated at the top of his class. By this time he had both a wife and son to support so God’s blessings were particularly bountiful when he was offered a good job with a reputable insurance defense law firm which had an office in Oxford, Miss., a wonderful place to live.
After several years, Reed joined his supervising attorneys to form what is today Freeland Martz, PLLC. During this period, Reed and his wife had more children and adopted two others. Reed and Dee Dee have five children (Gabriel, Margaret, Jonathan, Anna, and Claire), all of whom are homeschooled by a mother with the patience of a saint. Reed’s family has a beloved standard poodle, Ollie, and only half-jokingly questions the need for any other breed.
In 2017, Reed opened the second office of Freeland Martz, PLLC in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Just five minutes away from Chattanooga, Tennessee, this second office greatly expands the reach of Freeland Martz into eastern Tennessee and northwest Georgia as well as solidifying the existing service to north Alabama clients. The second office also made it possible for the Martz family to embark on an exciting move to a beautiful area of the country with abundant opportunities for the children’s education (including Georgia Virtual School and CSTHEA) and sporting interests with the Chattanooga Patriots.
In his free time, Reed enjoys distance running and outdoor sports including camping, hunting, and shooting. Due to his passion and years of study, Reed is regarded by many to be the foremost expert on Mississippi gun laws and 2nd Amendment issues. He is actively involved in the community and faith-based organizations.
Publications & Media: Reed is widely published in multiple law journals, bar association magazines, and maintains a Second Amendment-related blog. Reed is a regular guest on radio programs such as SuperTalk MS and Mississippi Public Radio. He has been consulted for articles appearing in multiple newspapers including the Wall Street Journal and on Justicia.com. Reed is a staple of continuing legal education (CLE) seminars dealing with issues including technology/internet security, civil rights, gun laws, and the representation of clients with diminished legal capacity.
