States of Admission: Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee

Offices: Oxford, MS & Chattanooga, TN

Education:  Bachelor of Arts, Summa Cum Laude, University of Mississippi, 2001; Juris Doctor, Magna Cum Laude, University of Mississippi School of Law, 2003.  While in law school, I was on the Mississippi Law Journal and served as a teaching assistant for constitutional law.

Legal Experience: Since 2004, I have had the opportunity to practice in multiple states doing almost every kind of law. I believe this broad range of experience allows my clients to approach problems with unique, outside-the-box thinking and methods.  “A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.” While some use that phrase (or a shortened version) in a derogatory way, we believe that a broad area of experience is beneficial for successful outcomes. Just ask Forbes.

I was selected as one of the top 40 under 40 litigation lawyers in Mississippi by the American Society of Legal Advocates.  Additionally, I was selected as one of the 10 Best Family Law Attorneys for Mississippi by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys (AIOFLA). I have received numerous awards and recognition for a client-focused approach and professionalism. But, what really matters to each client is how they are treated and I do my best to meet every person where they are.

Biography: After graduating from Brandon High School, I attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) on a full academic scholarship.  I majored in political science with an emphasis in criminal justice programs. Initially, I planned to join the United States Marine Corps as a path toward a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  These plans changed when I met my to-be wife, the former Dee Dee Burt, and was offered another generous academic scholarship to continue my studies at the University of Mississippi School of Law.

While in law school I made good grades and graduated near the top of my class.  By graduation day, I had both a wife and son to support so God’s blessings were particularly bountiful when I was offered a good job with a reputable insurance defense law firm which had an office in Oxford, Miss., a wonderful place to live.

After several years, I joined my supervising attorneys (read: “friends”) to form what is today Freeland Martz, PLLC.  During this period, my wife and I had more children and adopted two others. In total, we have five children (Gabriel, Margaret, Jonathan, Anna, and Claire), all of whom were/are homeschooled by a mother with the patience of a saint. My family loves standard poodles, Ollie (05/08/2014-10/16/2023) & Roydell (08/25/2023-present), and I only half-jokingly question the need for any other breed.

In 2017, I opened the second office of Freeland Martz, PLLC in Lookout Mountain.  Just five minutes away from Chattanooga, Tennessee, this second office greatly expands the reach of the firm into eastern Tennessee and northwest Georgia as well as solidifying the existing service to north Alabama clients.  The second office also made it possible for the Martz family to embark on an exciting move to a beautiful area of the country with abundant opportunities for the children’s education and sporting interests.  The Martz family now calls the Scenic City home, and Freeland Martz, PLLC opened its downtown Chattanooga office in 2019.

In my free time, I enjoy running and outdoor sports including camping, hunting, biking, and shooting.  Due to my passion and years of study, I am regarded by many to be a foremost expert on gun laws and 2nd Amendment issues. I have worked along with the Gun Owners of America (GOA), Tennessee Firearms Association, The Well Armed Woman, the National Rifle Association, and others. I am actively involved in community and faith-based organizations.

Publications & Media:  I am widely published in multiple law journals and bar association magazines. I maintain a Second Amendment-related blog. I am a regular guest on radio programs such as SuperTalk MS and Mississippi Public Radio.  I have been consulted for articles appearing in multiple newspapers including the Wall Street Journal and on Justicia.com and DailyCaller.com.  For many years I have spoken at continuing legal education (CLE) seminars dealing with issues including technology/internet security, civil rights, gun laws, and the representation of clients with diminished legal capacity.

Reed has a 5.0/5.0 client review rating.
